Mt. Fuji

I like this time of year in Japan. The oppressive heat of the summer is gone, autumn passed by in a blink and the haze that lingers in the air through the warmer months has gone and more often than not we get bright blue skies. Of late when I’ve been getting the train around town I often get a nice view of Mt. Fuji. It really is beautiful from a distance, for most of the year we can’t see it for all the haze and smog, but in the clear skies of winter it shines out and you can see it from miles around. It takes about 3 hours to drive to it from where I live, I have to pass through the massive expanse that is Tokyo and then some, but it still towers way above anything else in it’s path.

It really has a beautiful shape, outwith the summer months the peak is covered with snow and it’s not a surprise that it has become such an iconic image in the Japan and is so widely incorporated into Japanese art. The photo book section of all the big Japanese book stores has numerous tomes filled with images of Mt. Fuji from every possible angle throughout the seasons.

Even in the winter months when the skies are clear, often you can only see Mt. Fuji clearly early in the morning or at sunset, so these are the best times to photograph it. A couple of years ago one of my friends drove me out there early in the morning so we could get some shots of it at sun rise. We got it really nicely from across Yamanaka ko lake as the sun came up. I used medium format in my Mamiya and a blue filter over the lens. Came out very nicely and the image has been hung in a fair few of my friends houses. Always nice to give a photo as a gift.

    Hi Will

This is a stunning shot of Fuji. Still cant believe I climbed it 6 years ago – it looks alot nicer here than when you’re on top of it.

You must be proud of this one.

This, I think, has a perfect subject for Nature Photographers and a haven for people with cameras.
